Project Management Training Through Game Based Learning

by George H. Purdy

A project is any task which has a clear beginning and ending point - which, in today's world, means that most work consists of a project or series of projects. This is why it is so important that we understand the nature of projects and the tools and techniques necessary to complete them. While training nowadays seems to be compartmentalized into discrete categories such as technology training or management training, project management training must be interdisciplinary because projects by their very nature involve all these skills and more.

Consider a software development project, which starts only after a good reason is provided. For this to happen, the desired outcome must be the same as the expected results of the project. As such, project planning begins with understanding the requirements. In this case, the requirements are set by the business analyst handling that client or relationship and must be tested using cases. Many types of requirements analysis software are available for sale. The next phase of project management begins only after all the requirements have been decided upon and written down.

Project management involves allocation of resources. Resources are cost centers as well. Therefore, a good project is one which utilizes some or all of its resources to derive the maximum contribution they can provide. Project Management involves use of timelines for managing the resources. Many project managers prefer to use project management template to obtain the desired objectives. Such templates are designed in worksheet software applications. Therefore, project management training must include hands-on training on worksheet processing software.

Any project involves two-way communication throughout the life cycle of the project. The feedback loop is of immense importance to project managers to understand the current status of project. Current status of project affects the project planning in future. Training in project management must therefore also include hands-on training on the communication tools being used in the particular project. Such training will reap in huge rewards. Communication training goes beyond mail software training. You must emphasize the relevance of routine check-ups during the life cycle of project.

Resource allocation on project deals with allocation of resources including human capital, capable of doing tasks in a logical manner in order that the project objectives are met. Training in project management emphasizes on human capital management i.e., organizational behavior, costing and human resource management and includes sessions on quality, value engineering, and theory of constraints. These theories are not to be just read, but imbibed as a philosophy in every project. Hence, project management trainings must include tasks which involve application of the key take-aways from the sessions.

In recent times, many trainers have started using specially designed computer games to illustrate the project management concepts. these games involve the learner to use project management technology and focus on their approach to training project management concepts. The outcome of such game based training is quantifiable through course assessment. it can be summarized that training should also involve the learner to perform tasks using project management technology and not only traditional project management philosophies.

Since always, a deadline is attached to a project; it requires proper planning to complete the project effectively in time. In order to meet the project's objectives, the project methodology and project management tools must be understood effectively. A project entails allocation of resources and these have to be utilized well. Therefore project management training is essential. Communication is very important during the life of the project. This helps in effectively managing the project and so relevant training should be provided. Specially designed computer games are being used to teach project management concepts. Such games use project management technology.
